About Jaswantgarh War Memorial

Jaswantgarh War Memorial is dedicated to Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat of the 4th Garhwal Rifles, who single-handedly held back an advancing Chinese battalion for 72 hours during the 1962 Sino-Indian War before making the ultimate sacrifice. He was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India's second-highest military honour. The memorial is maintained by the Indian Army and includes a shrine where Jaswant Singh is worshipped as a deity by local Monpa people and soldiers alike. His uniform, rifle, and personal belongings are preserved here. The Indian Army runs a canteen at the site. The memorial is located on the main road to Tawang near Nuranang, making it a natural stop on the journey.
