Ashoka Pillar
About Ashoka Pillar
A polished sandstone column standing 10.6 metres tall inside Allahabad Fort, the Ashoka Pillar is one of India most remarkable ancient monuments. Originally erected by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE at Kaushambi, it bears six edicts in Brahmi script alongside later inscriptions by Gupta emperor Samudragupta and Mughal emperor Jahangir, making it a rare layered record across three dynasties. Access requires prior permission from the fort army administration.
