About Manakula Vinayagar Temple

Manakula Vinayagar Temple is one of the oldest and most loved temples in Pondicherry, dedicated to Lord Ganesha as Manakula Vinayagar. The temple dates back at least 500 years and is believed to have existed before the French arrived in Pondicherry. Despite repeated French attempts to relocate it, the temple remained in its current position in the heart of White Town behind Raj Niwas. The temple is known for its vibrantly painted gopuram, its 40 murals depicting various forms of Ganesha, and its resident temple elephant who blesses devotees with her trunk at certain hours. The atmosphere is alive throughout the day with devotees, fragrant flowers, and the sound of temple bells.
