About St. John in the Wilderness Church

St. John in the Wilderness is an Anglican church built in 1846 and one of the earliest buildings constructed in Nainital. Dedicated to St. John the Baptist, it stands in Neo-Gothic style amid dense forest near the northern end of the town, close to the Uttarakhand High Court.

The church has deep historical significance as a memorial to the victims of the great Nainital landslide of 18 September 1880, in which 151 people were killed when the northern hillside collapsed. A brass plaque inside records the names of those who perished. The stained glass windows and stone architecture have been preserved in good condition.

The church remains an active place of worship under the Church of North India. Visitors are welcome outside service hours. A quiet and historically resonant stop, particularly for those interested in colonial hill station history.
