About Chand Kazi’s Samadhi
Chand Kazi's Samadhi in Mayapur marks the resting place of Chand Kazi, the local Muslim magistrate (qazi) who initially opposed Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's public Hari-kirtan processions and tried to stop them. According to Vaishnava tradition, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu visited the Kazi's home with a large procession of devotees and through gentle persuasion and philosophical dialogue, won him over. The Kazi became a supporter of the kirtan movement, and his samadhi is maintained by ISKCON as a symbol of interfaith dialogue and harmony. A champa (plumeria) tree planted by the Kazi is said to still stand at the site.
