About Mahaparinirvana Temple
Mahaparinirvana Temple in Kushinagar is the most sacred Buddhist site in the town, marking the exact location where Gautama Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana (final nirvana) in 483 BCE. The temple houses a magnificent 6.1-metre reclining Buddha statue carved from red sandstone in the Mathura School style, dating to the 5th century CE. The statue depicts the Buddha in his final moment of passing. The temple complex is surrounded by monastic ruins and ancient stupas excavated by ASI. It is one of the four most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world and receives pilgrims from across Asia throughout the year.
