About Vishwanath Temple
Vishwanath Temple at Khajuraho is a 10th-century Chandela temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, built by King Dhanga around 1002 CE. It is one of the major temples in the Western Group and originally had four subsidiary shrines at its corners, of which two survive. The main shrine is particularly notable for the exquisite quality of its apsara and mithuna sculptures, considered some of the finest at Khajuraho. The temple is named after Lord Shiva as Vishwanath (Lord of the Universe) — the same epithet used at the famous Kashi Vishwanath. A large Nandi (bull of Shiva) pavilion faces the main shrine, following traditional temple planning principles.
