Gandhi Memorial Mandapam

The Gandhi Memorial Mandapam in Kanyakumari is a striking tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, built at the very spot where his ashes were kept before immersion in the sea in 1948. Designed by architect Saumya Ranjan Sinha in the style of an Orissan temple, the structure is oriented so that sunlight falls precisely on the ash casket point every year on Gandhi Jayanti, October 2. The memorial stands close to the shoreline and offers views of the ocean from within its pillared hall.
