Umaid Bhawan Palace
About Umaid Bhawan Palace
Umaid Bhawan Palace is one of the largest private residences in the world, built between 1929 and 1943 by Maharaja Umaid Singh. The construction was commissioned partly as a famine relief project, employing thousands of local workers during a severe drought. The palace is built from honey-golden Chittar sandstone without any mortar and is divided into three sections: the residence of the royal family, the Taj-managed luxury hotel, and a museum open to the public. The museum displays vintage cars, royal memorabilia, clocks, trophies, and portraits of the Jodhpur rulers. The building is a blend of Western Art Deco and Indian architectural styles and sits on the highest point of the city.
