About Raja Gangadhar Rao Chhatri
Raja Gangadhar Rao Chhatri is the memorial cenotaph of Raja Gangadhar Rao, the husband of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, who died in 1853. The Chhatri is an ornate memorial pavilion in the traditional Bundelkhand style, located near the Lakshmi Tal in Jhansi. The death of Raja Gangadhar Rao and the refusal of the British East India Company to recognise the Rani's adopted heir under the Doctrine of Lapse was the immediate cause of Rani Lakshmibai's rebellion during the 1857 Revolt. The chhatri thus has deep historical significance as a site connected to one of India's most beloved freedom fighters.
