About Desert National Park

Spread across 3,162 sq km near Jaisalmer and Barmer, Desert National Park is one of the largest protected areas in India and a rare example of a desert ecosystem under conservation. The park is home to chinkaras, desert foxes, desert cats, monitor lizards, and over 120 bird species. The Great Indian Bustard, one of the most critically endangered birds in the world, has its last viable habitat here. Jeep safaris into the park reveal dunes, scrubland, rocky outcrops, and salt lakes. The fossils of marine creatures found here are evidence that this entire region was once under the sea millions of years ago.
