Tomb of Tansen

The Tomb of Tansen honours Mian Tansen, widely regarded as the greatest musician in the history of Indian classical music and one of the nine gems (Navaratnas) of Emperor Akbar's court. Tansen was born in Gwalior around 1506 and is credited with creating several Hindustani ragas that remain foundational to the tradition.

The tomb is a modest sandstone structure located next to the far more ornate tomb of Mohammad Ghaus - the 16th century Sufi saint who was Tansen's spiritual mentor and who aided Babur in capturing Gwalior. The Ghaus tomb is a superb example of early Mughal architecture with ornate jali (lattice) screens and a marble-inlaid dome.

Every year in November or December, the Tansen Music Festival is held at this site - one of the most prestigious classical music events in India, drawing top performers from across the country. Entry free. Open daily.
