About Sun Temple

The Sun Temple in Gwalior is a modern Hindu temple dedicated to Surya, the Sun God, built in 1988 by industrialist and philanthropist Ghanshyam Das Birla. The temple is modelled on the famous Konark Sun Temple in Odisha and constructed in red sandstone and marble with intricately carved panels depicting the Sun God and his attendants.

The temple is set within Surya Van, a beautifully maintained garden complex with manicured lawns, flowering trees, and water features that create a serene atmosphere. The temple and gardens are popular for early morning and evening visits when the light plays off the sandstone carvings.

Located on the outskirts of Gwalior towards Morar, the Sun Temple offers a peaceful contrast to the busy heritage sites in the city centre. Open daily; no entry fee for the temple.
