Man Mandir Palace
About Man Mandir Palace
Man Mandir Palace is the most celebrated structure inside Gwalior Fort, built by the Tomar ruler Raja Man Singh Tomar between 1486 and 1516. The four-storey sandstone palace served as the main royal residence of the Tomar dynasty and is considered one of the finest examples of Rajput architecture in central India.
The palace exterior is covered in vivid mosaic tile work in turquoise, blue, green, and yellow - depicting elephants, ducks, crocodiles, and banana trees in an unusual decorative style that mixes Hindu and Central Asian influences. The underground chambers of the palace were later used as dungeons by the Mughal emperors, where notable prisoners including Mughal princes were held.
The nightly sound and light show is staged here, bringing the palace to life with illuminated projections and narrated history. Included in the Gwalior Fort entry ticket.
