About Pathiramanal Island

Pathiramanal, meaning Midnight Sands, is a small uninhabited island of about 10 acres in the middle of Vembanad Lake, about 10 km from Alappuzha. The island is densely covered in natural vegetation and is accessible only by country boat. It is one of the finest birdwatching spots in Kerala, home to over 91 species of rare migratory and local birds including the open-bill stork, cormorant, darter, and various herons. During the migratory season the trees are thick with nesting birds. The island has no commercial development and retains a completely natural character. Most visitors reach it as part of a backwater boat tour from Thanneermukkom or Kumarakom.
