About Neermahal Water Palace

Neermahal, meaning Water Palace, was built in 1930 by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur as a summer retreat for the royal family of Tripura. It is one of only two water palaces in India, the other being the Jal Mahal in Jaipur. The red and white palace sits on an island in the middle of Rudrasagar Lake and blends Hindu and Mughal architectural styles. Visitors reach the palace by boat from the shore, a short and scenic ride across the lake. The palace complex has a large swimming pool, a theatre, and ornate arched halls. The annual Neermahal Water Festival features boat races and cultural performances on the lake. The palace and surrounding lake are at their most atmospheric at sunrise and sunset.
